Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary with Innovative Maps
In honor of America’s 250th anniversary, Design on Edge was thrilled to partner on a groundbreaking project to research, design, illustrate, and develop a suite of maps that bring to life the rich history of Western Nevada’s Comstock era. Funded by a grant from Travel Nevada Rural and commissioned to commemorate this national milestone, our team crafted not only print and downloadable maps, but also three highly unique interactive online maps—the first of their kind to guide visitors through historic trade routes and key moments of the Comstock legacy.
Navigating Complex Challenges with Creativity
Designing across multiple formats, print, downloadable PDFs, and interactive digital platforms posed exciting challenges. We had to thoughtfully balance color, branding, and usability, ensuring that the final product was not only visually engaging but also ADA-compliant and accessible to all users. The client provided an extensive body of historical research, which required careful compression and translation into educational, functional design elements without sacrificing depth or accuracy.
The Grant Journey: Innovation Meets Compliance
Projects supported by grants come with a distinct set of demands. The grant ecosystem is vast and often fragmented: each funder carries unique priorities, application processes, and deadlines that require dedicated time for research and alignment. For designers, this means innovating while remaining compliant a balancing act we embraced by focusing on:

- Utilizing grant directories and networking to uncover opportunities and inspiration for creative presentation.
- Breaking down the application process into manageable phases to maintain momentum and creativity.
- Collaborating closely with partners for administrative and compliance support.

A Collaboration That Brings History to Life
This project exemplifies the power of partnership. The Washoe Valley Alliance, Scenic Nevada, and the Pleasant Valley/Steamboat Landowners Associations pooled their resources and vision to fulfill goals outlined in Washoe County’s Envision Washoe 2040 initiatives. Together, they’ve created a compelling educational tool that promotes tourism and invites students, residents, and visitors to immerse themselves in Nevada’s history and its role in shaping America’s broader story.

At Design on Edge, this project stands out as a stellar example of how traditional design methodologies and meticulous research can harmonize with modern digital tools to create a meaningful user experience. By combining print techniques with accessible, interactive digital maps, we delivered a product that bridges history and technology, inviting everyone to explore, learn, and appreciate the vibrant past of the Comstock era.
