Hole Yeah: A Fun New Approach to Mini Golf
When a client approached us with a simple yet intriguing brief — “90s grunge vibes” — we instantly knew this project would hold a special place in our hearts. Hole Yeah is set to become Northern Nevada’s first mobile mini golf service, making appearances at trade shows, weddings, birthdays, and beyond. Our biggest challenge? Crafting a brand that felt cool, approachable, and dripping with nostalgic charm. This is our creative brand design case study for Hole Yeah Mini Golf!
During the creative exploration, we discovered that developing a mascot could be the perfect way to bring the brand story to life. Why? Because mascots are a powerhouse in branding. They make your brand instantly recognizable and inject fun, personality, and memorable moments into the way people connect with your company. There’s a very 50s-esque cartoon mascot vibe that’s currently trending, and while we liked the idea, we needed something more true to the grunge 90s brand voice.
The Hole Yeah golf ball mascot emerged from a collaborative team brainstorming session, going through more than 10 different versions before it was ever shown to the client. In some iterations, he sported a bright red spiky mohawk; in others, his tongue playfully stuck out. This process showcased excellent teamwork among creatives united by a vision for something extraordinary. Ultimately, the mascot debuted with a turf mohawk, stylish sunglasses, and a bold energy that drives the brand forward.
The support elements and patterns are inspired by the grunge look of the 90s, with a bold modern twist. Chaotic, fun, and colorful are just a few words that could describe the brand’s look and feel. The brand voice is cheeky, relatable, and a little silly. There’s a lot of wordplay, and honestly, who wouldn’t want to work hard but putt harder?
Building a brand as fun and unique as this was an exciting challenge—embracing a vibe that wasn’t in our immediate wheelhouse (fun fact: our lead designer on this project wasn’t even born in the ’90s) and still delivering a result the client truly loves and feels passionate about. The client had a clear vision for how this brand should look and feel, and bringing that to life in such a fun and dynamic way made this project a definite team favorite!
